Nearly two decades into her estate management journey, Samantha Subban, Marketing Manager at Brettenwood Estate, reflects on what made it meaningful: walking the path alongside her sister and mentor, Maril, Estate Manager at Zululami Estate.

Together, they embody the phrase “strong women, stronger together.”

Their shared career path wasn’t planned but was meant to be. In 2007, Samantha was newly qualified, when Maril, then at Simbithi Estate, prepared to go on maternity leave and, with a leap of faith, asked her to step in. Samantha accepted, not knowing it was the start of a lifelong calling.

It’s the kind of story only sisters could write – shaped by trust, timing, and serendipity. Nearly 20 years later, both women continue to grow, each on her own path, leaving an indelible imprint on the industry.

The sisters couldn’t be more different. Maril is most often seen in boots and a hard hat and Samantha in heels – yet they share the same values, resilience and work ethic instilled by their parents. Their father’s legacy lives on in how they work, lead and give back to the community.

Through educational initiatives or tackling poverty, they are proud that their roles allow them to serve something bigger than themselves. This is the legacy they strive to leave on the North Coast.

Samantha wants to celebrate the quiet strength of women – the kind that grows through lived experience. She also honours sisters, whether by blood or bond, who reflect the light of women back to them when they forget how bright they shine. To her sister, she says, “You will always be my inspiration!”
