Ballito ophthalmologist Dr Reddy gives the gift of sight to four cataract patients
The surgeries were done free of charge ahead of World Sight Day.
Four patients suffering from cataracts were recently thrilled to receive free surgeries from Ballito ophthalmologist Dr Yavische Reddy at Netcare Alberlito Hospital.
The recipients could not afford the surgery, which costs tens of thousands of rands through private healthcare, and would otherwise have had to wait on long government hospital lists. Dr Reddy performed the pro bono work as part of her community service initiatives ahead of World Sight Day on October 8.
Cataracts are one of the most common causes of vision loss, particularly among people over the age of 60.
A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye – which focuses light onto the retina – becomes cloudy, causing blurred or dim vision. As the lens thickens and proteins break down over time, the clouding worsens, making daily activities increasingly difficult.
While cataracts often develop in both eyes, they may progress at different rates, leading to uneven vision. The only effective treatment is surgical removal of the cloudy lens, which is then replaced with a clear, artificial one to restore sight.

Premila Pillay (66), a pensioner from Glenhills in KwaDukuza, said she was ecstatic with the results of the surgery.
“I live alone and want to be able to look after myself and not rely on my two daughters,” she said.
“The surgery has given me the ability to do that and I am incredibly grateful to Dr Reddy and Netcare for the opportunity.”
Aster Naicker (50), an unemployed widow from Tongaat, shared the sentiment, calling the surgery a Godsend.
“Not being able to see properly is a difficult thing and my left eye was almost blind,” she said.
“After the bandage was removed and I could read the full eye chart, I could barely believe my eyes.”
All of the patients thanked Dr Reddy, Netcare Alberlito Hospital and the staff at both for the excellent care they received.
