Take control of your eye health with Ballito ophthalmologist Dr Jugadoe
More than 80% of vision issues are treatable or preventable if caught early enough.
As World Sight Day returns on October 9, the #LoveYourEyes campaign continues the call for people to take control of their vision.
Eye health is a critical part of general wellness, but often goes overlooked. More than 80% of blindness and vision impairment is preventable or treatable, often through simple interventions like glasses or cataract surgery.
Eye specialists worldwide are joining hands to urge individuals, communities and governments to prioritise eye health and to call for accessible, available and affordable eye care for all.
Ballito-based Ophthalmologist Dr Bhavna Jugadoe is one medical professional supporting the cause.
“A particular focus this year is to highlight the eye health of children, emphasising the importance of early interventions for conditions like childhood myopia to prevent future vision loss and improve education outcomes,” said Dr Jugadoe.
Myopia control in children involves slowing the progression of near-sightedness using special atropine eye drops or special glasses or contact lenses. Lifestyle changes like increasing outdoor time and taking breaks from screen to reduce eye strain can also help.
“The best approach is personalised, often involving a combination of treatments and requiring close monitoring by an eye care professional to prevent myopia and associated complications later in life,” she said.
World Sight Day also highlights the eye health needs of ageing populations, particularly in the treatment of cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
So #LoveYourEyes this year, whether young or old, and book an eye test with a suitable professional soon. It could make a huge difference to your daily quality of life.
