Evolving McDonald’s Swapo Road to enhance customer experience
The expanded restaurant offers 24/7 trading and McCafé, bringing more choice and convenience to Durban
McDonald’s is expanding its offering in Durban North with the opening of a significantly larger Swapo Road restaurant. Introducing 24/7 trading and McCafé with barista-made coffee for the first time at this location. The expansion delivers greater convenience, more choice and an enhanced customer experience, giving the Swapo Road community more ways to enjoy McDonald’s throughout the day and night.
Designed around customers’ evolving needs and lifestyles, the new restaurant combines an expanded in-store experience with multiple ways to order and enjoy the brand. From morning coffee and breakfast to lunch on the go, an afternoon coffee break, dinner with family or a late-night meal, Swapo Road is now equipped to serve a broader range of customer occasions.

The introduction of McCafé and round-the-clock trading represents a significant enhancement to the restaurant’s offering, extending McDonald’s presence across more moments in customers’ daily lives.
“We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of the Swapo Road community. This expansion is about more than a bigger restaurant; it is about evolving our offering to give customers greater choice, convenience and flexibility,” says Keegan Alicks, Chief Marketing Officer at McDonald’s SA. “With the introduction of McCafé and 24/7 trading, we can serve our customers across more occasions, whether they are starting their day with a coffee, meeting friends, enjoying a family meal or looking for something to eat late at night. We are excited to bring an enhanced McDonald’s experience to the community.”
An enhanced experience, designed around customers
The expanded Swapo Road restaurant combines convenience, digital innovation and an enhanced dine-in environment to give customers greater flexibility in how they engage with McDonald’s.
The new offering includes:
• 24/7 trading, giving customers access to McDonald’s around the clock.
• McCafé, introducing barista-made coffee to the Swapo Road restaurant.
• A drive-through, providing convenience for customers on the move.
• Four self-ordering kiosks, offering a convenient and flexible ordering experience.
• Mobile order & pay, enabling customers to order through the McDonald’s app.
• McDelivery, available through Uber Eats and Mr D.
• Increased seating capacity, creating more space for customers to dine in.
• An expanded restaurant environment, designed to deliver an immersive McDonald’s brand experience.
Together, these features create a more integrated customer proposition, connecting in-restaurant dining with digital ordering, drive-through and delivery. The result is a restaurant designed to meet customers where they are, making it easier to enjoy McDonald’s in the way that best suits their needs.
“Our focus is on creating experiences that fit naturally into our customers’ lives,” adds Alicks. “Whether someone is stopping for coffee on their way to work, ordering through the app, collecting a meal through the drive-through or spending time with family and friends, the expanded Swapo Road restaurant offers more ways to enjoy McDonald’s. With 24/7 trading, that convenience extends into the night.”
The expansion also highlights the role of locally owned McDonald’s restaurants in supporting employment, developing young talent and contributing to the communities in which they operate.
The Swapo Road restaurant is owned by local business entrepreneurs who operate 18 McDonald’s restaurants across KZN, including two in Richards Bay, and employ close to 1 000 young people across their business.
Their investment in the brand is complemented by a commitment to community development, particularly through initiatives that support education, digital inclusion and literacy.
Since 2018, their computer bus initiative has travelled across KZN, providing schoolchildren with access to computers and IT education delivered with the support of a qualified IT teacher. By bringing technology into learning environments, the initiative helps expose learners to digital tools and skills that are increasingly important for future education and employment opportunities.
The entrepreneurs have also supported literacy through book-drive initiatives. Providing books to pupils during Literacy Month and helping reinforce the importance of reading and access to educational resources.
These initiatives demonstrate how local business growth can extend beyond commercial investment, creating opportunities for young people while building stronger relationships with schools and communities.
“Our restaurants are part of the communities we serve, and we believe our responsibility goes beyond serving food,” says Alicks. “Our business creates opportunities for young people to work, learn and develop, while our community initiatives allow us to contribute to education and skills development in meaningful ways. As we grow, we remain committed to growing alongside our communities and building relationships that make a lasting difference.”
The Swapo Road restaurant will continue to engage with local schools, teachers, learners and community stakeholders, supporting ongoing opportunities for connection and community participation.
With McCafé and 24/7 trading at the centre of its expanded offering, McDonald’s Swapo Road is positioned to serve customers all day, from the first coffee of the morning to late-night meals.
To celebrate the opening, customers can look forward to a programme of activations, entertainment and competitions. A R4.50 soft serve promotion will also run throughout the opening month, subject to applicable terms and conditions.
The expanded McDonald’s Swapo Road restaurant is now open, welcoming Durban customers to experience more choice, greater convenience, an enhanced restaurant environment and McDonald’s around the clock.
