Hijacking gang busted

Hijacking, armed robbery, abduction and gang rape were among the charges.

Six people were arrested in connection with numerous hijacking, armed robbery, abduction and gang rape cases on Friday, November 22.

Members from the Phoenix Cluster Crime Intelligence and Umhlali K9 at Ndwedwe, Isipingo and Durban Central came together to make the arrests.

Five carjacking reports with regard to cars stolen around Umbilo, Mayville, Verulem and Pinetown were made during November, each indicating that a Corsa Bakkie had been used in the hijacking.

In one specific case in Parlock on Sunday, November 17, a young woman was hijacked in her vehicle by five suspects who allegedly abducted her, taking her to Ozwathini where two men raped her. They then proceeded to Hurburg where they left her and then back to Verulam where they allegedly withdrew R4000 from her account. The hijackers allegedly abandoned the Toyota Carola they had hijacked from the victim when it ran out of petrol.

Members from Phoenix Cluster Crime Intelligence arrested three suspects in Ndwedwe, recovered a 9mm pistol with five live rounds in Cator Manor, arrested a suspect at Durban Central and another at Reunion railway station. The members also went to Empangeni where they recovered the Opel Corsa used in committing the crimes.

All arrested suspects were charged for armed robbery, hijacking, unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, abduction and rape.
