Two killed in alleged Tongaat taxi violence

An unknown man on foot reportedly opened fire on a taxi owner and his companion

An alleged taxi related shooting in Tongaat claimed the lives of two people, one of whom is believed to have been a Tongaat taxi owner.

This comes just six days after Dolphin Coast taxi association chairperson Robert Stephen was killed in cold blood in Etete on Monday.

Today’s shooting took place around 6pm this evening.

Emergency Control SA chairperson Ishmail Mitha told The Courier that a man on foot had opened fire at the Tongaat taxi owner and his friend who were having a conversation outside Teddy’s Supermarket on the R102 in the busy Gandhi’s Hill area.

“It is believed the two men were standing outside a private vehicle.

“Someone walked by and shot at them before disappearing into the crowd.”

Two men believed to have been a taxi owner and his friend were shot in Gadhi’s Hill this afternoon.

IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst confirmed that taxi owner’s companion had died at the scene of the shooting while the taxi owner passed away in hospital about an hour later.

“The taxi owner was transported by IPSS Medical Rescue’s advanced life support paramedics with about six gunshot wounds.”

Mitha said Tongaat SAPS are investigating if the incident was, indeed, taxi related.
