Three Tongaat residents face charges of defeating the ends of justice after they allegedly opened a false hijacking case.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the three men aged between 18 – 22 years old were arrested and appeared in the Verulam Magistrates Court this Monday where they were each released on R500 bail.

“According to the suspects, on August 3 the driver of a VW Polo vehicle and his two passengers were travelling along Watson Highway, Tongaat when they were stopped by an unknown person who wanted a lift.
“They alleged the hitchhiker pointed a weapon at the driver who was instructed to drive towards Umdloti. While at Umdloti, they said their vehicle crashed into another vehicle and into a barrier. The alleged hijacker fled the scene and according to the driver, nothing was taken.
“Police obtained a sworn statement from all three occupants of the VW Polo who stated they were hijacked.”
However, an investigation has led police to believe that the three men had reported a false crime.
“All three suspects were arrested for defeating the ends of justice. This is once again an indication that our police officers will not condone the misuse of police resources through the opening of false cases.”
The case is remanded until September 7 pending further investigation.
