Diners attacked in Salt Rock bar brawl

According to the witness, the fighters were all locals in their late teens/early twenties.

A young couple new to Salt Rock ended up in hospital after they were dragged into a vicious brawl in a local restaurant and bar on Friday night.

As disturbing as the brawl itself, bystanders were reportedly more concerned with filming the fight than with helping the pair or stopping the abuse.

The couple, new to the Dolphin Coast, were apparently enjoying a meal at Saltyz on Basil Hulett Drive when the fight broke out between a group of youngsters. The fight soon moved to the couple’s table.

According to a witness, who asked not to be named, while the wife was nearly forced into her plate of food her husband stood and attempted to shield her from the madness.

“The youngsters then grabbed the man and threw him to the floor. They dragged him onto the deck where they kept kicking and punching him while his wife was screaming hysterically, trying to stop them.”

It was here that the two bouncers finally managed to force their way through the crowd of disturbingly eager onlookers, one helping the man outside while the other attempted to contain the fighting youngsters to the deck area.

According to the witness, the fighters were all locals in their late teens/early twenties.

After the attack, the couple immediately made their way to Alberlito Hospital where the blood-soaked husband was treated for various cuts, bruises and a cracked coccyx.

Saltyz’ manager Belinda Moodley said they were shocked by the behaviour of the young men.

“We do not condone any sort of violence,” said Moodley.

“The responsible parties have since been banned from the premises.”

She told the Courier her understanding of events was that the injured man attempted to intervene to stop the fight before the youths set upon him.

The couple have viewed the CCTV footage of the incident and been to the police to open a case.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Captain Vinny Pillay confirmed that a case of assault had been opened and that police were investigating the matter.
