A serial offender who raped a woman while she was on her way home from her father’s memorial service was sentenced to 22 years behind bars on charges of rape, murder, and assault on October 22.
Simphiwe Khumalo (26) was found guilty of raping the grieving daughter after her father’s memorial service in Glendale in 2015.
The Stanger court court heard that the man accosted the 23-year-old woman in the sugar cane field where he assaulted and raped her. She managed to escape and get help from a passerby.
DNA evidence linked the man to the crime.
In a separate incident a year later, Khumalo assaulted and murdered his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend during a fight in May 2016.

During his trial, it was heard that Khumalo first assaulted his ex-girlfriend as she was leaving her boyfriend’s home.
When the boyfriend intervened, Khumalo kicked and stomped on his head before bystanders moved the injured man back to his room.
Khumalo then stormed into the room and repeatedly slashed the victim on his face and head – killing him.
Last week Khumalo was sentenced to eight years for rape, 14 years for murder and three years for assault.
