Newark woman in handcuffs for vigilantism, murder and kidnapping

'Vigilantism will not be tolerated', say police.

A 49-year-old woman appeared at the KwaDukuza Magistrate Court last Friday in connection with a murder, attempted murder and kidnapping that took place in Newark earlier this year.

It is alleged that she and her four accomplices took two young men to a house in Bulwer Farm, where they stabbed their hostages with spears and assaulted them with bush knives and a wooden stick.

Lungisani Buthelezi (18) died and the second victim (20) managed to escape with serious injuries.

“A case of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping was opened at Newark police station for investigation.

“Four males aged between 19 and 43 were arrested two months ago and taken to court where they were remanded in custody.

“Police investigations continued and it led to the arrest of the woman who had fled the area,” said KZN police spokesperson colonel Thembeka Mbele.

The accused, who resides in Bulwer Farm, claimed the victims had committed crimes in the area, but no cases against them could be found.

She was kept in police custody and will appear again on November 14.

Mbele said vigilantism will not be tolerated and people are urged to report criminal activities to the police who will investigate and arrest those involved.
