Bakkie stolen from Salt Rock beach

Beachgoers are warned to be aware that car theft is an ongoing problem in the Salt Rock area.

Parking at the beach in Salt Rock is becoming a risky affair.

A bakkie was stolen early this morning from the beach parking for Tiffany’s Beach and Granny’s Pool.

At about 4.30am this morning, a white single cab Ford Ranger was stolen, the bakkie has a plumber pipe on the roof and fishing stickers on the tailgate.

This is not the first instance of vehicle theft on Salt Rock’s beaches. In April this year, thefts hit a major spike when five vehicles were stolen from Salt Rock main beach in the course of a month.

At the time, Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay said he suspected the spike in car theft was linked to two men released on parole. He was not available at the time of publication to comment on whether police suspected these same men, or another syndicate of operating in the area.

Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch’s Nathalie Struwe said they were aware that this was becoming a problem area for car theft.

“We have had a number of break-ins and car thefts here over the last few months. Together with RE/MAX and the Ballito Neighbourhood Watch, we are planning on installing number-plate recognition cameras in the next few weeks.”

Struwe said they had hoped to get the system installed by the arrival of the holiday season but had been delayed, she said they were definitely aiming to have them in place before the end of the year.
