Ballito family held at gunpoint

The thieves cleared out the home of valuables in about 15 minutes.

A family, including two children, were robbed at gunpoint in their Ballito home this afternoon.

The owner of the home, who asked to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, said six armed men entered through a sliding door and tied up her husband, 12-year-old child and mother-in-law, while her five-year-old child watched the ordeal unfold.

“The men entered the house at around 5.30pm through the sliding door which was left open.

“My husband, mother-in-law and children were all watching TV in the lounge when they were accosted by the men who held guns to their heads while they tied them up.

“My five-year-old was the only one who was left untied.”

The woman, who is currently in Johannesburg, said the robbers cleared out their home in about 15 minutes.

“They took everything from duvets to electronics and when they were done, they were trying to get a hold of their get-away car driver who was apparently late to pick them up.

“My husband even told them to take the car and just leave which they probably did not do because they feared that a tracker may have been fitted.”

The mother who is currently trying to get a flight back to Durban to comfort her traumatised family said her husband recognised one of the thieves from a brief encounter.

“One of the men who held a gun to my husband’s head had asked him for a painting job yesterday. This was probably planned.”

The family alerted their security company after the men fled.
