Allegedly drunk driver arrested for hit and run – Groutville

Police gave chase and caught him after he knocked down a telephone pole with his car.

A 38-year-old man was arrested for a hit and run in Groutville on Sunday afternoon.

The Mercedes Benz driver allegedly drove into a VW Jetta on the R102 near Groutville Clinic, and drove off from the scene of the accident at high speed.

“Fortunately the Umhlali K9 unit was in the area and they gave chase,” said KwaDukuza police spokesperson constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo.

“He drove into Groutville township where he knocked a telephone pole down before failing to turn at a bend.

“Upon seeing that he would soon be caught he abandoned the vehicle and started running on foot but police quickly caught him,” said Khuzwayo.

The man appeared at the KwaDukuza Magistrate Court on Monday on charges of drunk driving, negligent driving and failing to stop after causing an accident.
