The robber stopped his victim on the pretense of asking for directions.
Police are once again urging residents to be vigilant at all times after a local worker became the victim of an armed robbery on Wednesday morning.
Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Captain Vinny Pillay said the 29-year-old man was walking to work along the P445 link road to Ballito around 11.30am when he was stopped by a motorist driving a silver Nissan Tida asking for directions to a local church.
When the victim told the driver he did not know the address he was offered a lift to work.
The police said after he boarded the vehicle the driver pulled out a gun and demanded his cellphone.
He ordered his victim out the car and drove off.
The incident was reported at the local police station and a case of armed robbery is under investigation.
