Man arrested, child killed in hit and run in Tongaat
An off-duty policeman allegedly witnessed someone hiding the child's body next to the road.
A 50-year-old man was arrested for culpable homicide after a child was killed in a hit and run in Tongaat last Friday.
It is alleged that after the man had run over the eight-year-old boy with his vehicle on Jon Roz Crescent in Fairbreeze but he did not report the incident to the police, neither did he call paramedics.
Instead he allegedly tried to hide the body.
He later went to the police station and asked if the police had received any reports on the accident.
After he was told that no one had reported the incident, he allegedly hid his car in Melville township, outside KwaDukuza.
When he returned to the police station to ask again, he was arrested.
According to a police source an off-duty police officer witnessed something being dumped on the side of the road.
Upon inspection it was discovered it was the child.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the man would soon appear at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
