Man who repeatedly raped a mother more than twice his age sentenced to life

Life imprisonment was served to 26-year-old Skhumbuzo Sgede Ngogwane in the KwaDukuza Regional Court recently where he was found guilty of rape.

According to the police, Ngogwane had on the morning of January 1, 2018 brutally raped a 59-year-old mother at her home in the Mzulwini area of Maphumulo.

Shortly after midnight, the woman was asleep in her house when she heard a knock at the door.

Fearing that it could be an intruder, the woman contacted her children and alerted them.

“When Ngogwane heard the victim making a phone call, he forcefully kicked the door open.

“He grabbed the victim, dragged her out of the house and repeatedly raped her,” said Provincial SAPS communications officer, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

Maphumulo SAPS were alerted and, a case of rape was registered for investigation.

The docket was later transferred to the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who headed the investigation.

Ngogwane was arrested a day after the sexual assault.

Bail was successfully opposed and Ngogwane remained in custody until sentencing.

“This sentence will serve as a warning to other rapists who intend to commit such criminal acts and think they will get away with it.

“This conviction is also a victory to crimes directed at women and children,” said Colonel Mbele.
