Top six crimes for Tongaat, according to the crime stats

According to CPF Tongaat chairman Nazir Sadack, house break-ins and tyre theft cases are becoming more prevalent in Tongaat and outlying areas.

Below are the crime stats for Tongaat as per the national crime statistics.

The list below shows the increase and decrease in the prevalence of certain crimes, presented as the latest stats for the last year (2018/19) against the previous year (2017/18).

Take note: The difference between a house robbery and a house burglary is that the occupants were not home during a burglary.

The six worst crimes:

  1. Assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm: 191 – 114
  2. Murder: 48 – 37
  3. Attempted murder: 53 – 30
  4. Sexual assault: 9 – 3
  5. Burglary at non-residential premises: 95 – 69
  6. Malicious damage to property: 109 – 83

Notable decreases:

  1. Robbery at non-residential premises: 28 – 38
  2. Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle: 100 – 58
  3. Shoplifting: 39 – 13
  4. Drug-related crime: 531 – 315
  5. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: 189 – 29
  6. Burglary at residential premises: 282 – 270
