Tongaat security guard shot in armed robbery, dies in hospital

According to Jikelela Security manager Aruna Chetty, Pillay was a committed armed response officer who was nearing retirement.

A 59-year-old security guard was shot while guarding a commercial building in Tongaat earlier today.

Dan Pillay was apparently approached by a man who demanded Pillay’s firearm.

When Pillay refused to give it to him, the man allegedly shot him.

Dan Pillay was killed while on duty.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said the guard was shot in the chest and died after being airlifted to hospital.

According to Jikelela Security manager Aruna Chetty, Pillay was a committed armed response officer who was nearing retirement.

“He was a very dedicated person, loved his job and was very energetic.

“It is sad that he passed away in this manner and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and the management and staff who mourn the loss of their valued friend and colleague,” said Chetty.
