Rivalry at KwaDukuza soccer match sees one shot and killed

It is believed that during the fight, the crowd begun to throw glass bottles and chairs at one another.

A 35-year-old man attending a soccer match was arrested for killing another attendee during a match in Shakaville township outside KwaDukuza on Friday.

According to KwaDukuza SAPS station commander, Brigadier Sbongile Mhlongo, it is alleged that the man and the deceased attended a friendly soccer match at the Shakaville sports ground and during the match, an altercation broke out between the supporters of the two teams.

It is believed that during the fight, the crowd begun to throw glass bottles and chairs at one another.

“The man drew out his firearm and began firing shots. A 55-year-old man was injured and died at the sports field. The alleged shooter was arrested and his firearm was recovered, as well as the magazine from the firearm.”

The accused appeared at the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on Monday.

Brigadier Mhlongo expressed her sincere condolences to the victim’s family and said they would ensure that the detectives work around the clock to ensure the perpetrator is convicted for the crime he has committed.
