The police set up a roadblock to intercept the alleged robbers on the R74.

Five men who allegedly robbed a Maphumulo business of cash and airtime vouchers were arrested by the iLembe Cluster Rapid Response (ICRR) team on Sunday.

“Five armed men are alleged to have entered a shop at Plangweni in Maphumulo where, at gunpoint, they robbed the shop owner of cash and airtime vouchers,” said provincial Saps spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

The men fled in a minibus taxi and made their way toward KwaDukuza where the ICRR had set up a stop and search along the R74 freeway.

Police recovered cash and airtime vouchers stolen in a business robbery at Plangweni, Maphumulo.

The taxi was pulled over at Stanger Manor and a search recovered the stolen vouchers and cash. The men, aged between 22 and 27, were arrested.

“One man was found in possession of a home-made firearm and ammunition.

“The men will appear in court at Maphumulo magistrates court on charges of robbery and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition,” said Colonel Mbele.
