Umhlali Saps warn against alleged cop impersonator scamming firearm applicants

The man introduces himself as a captain seeking donations and who can fast-track firearm applications at a fee.

Umhlali police spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay has alerted residents about a scammer impersonating him, asking the public for money that will be donated to the poor.

“Most people know me as someone involved in many donor initiatives for the underprivileged, but I never ask for money. If I need donations, I ask for it in writing or go to potential donors in person,” said Pillay.

“About 13 to 14 people had been approached by this man who introduced himself as a captain Naidoo or Vinny Naidoo, who also claimed he could fast-track firearm application processes once a deposit was paid.

“We want the community to be aware of this scammer. Saps will never ask anyone to send money via eWallet,” said Pillay.
