Delivery driver allegedly shot and killed by N2 hitchhiker at Tongaat Toll Plaza
A passenger was also shot and wounded and was taken to hospital after being stabilised by paramedics.
A 48-year-old driver of a medical supply van was allegedly shot and killed by one of two male hitchhikers he picked up on the N2 between Ballito and Crocodile Creek Bridge on Monday afternoon.
According to Tongaat police spokesperson, warrant officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie, Raymond Naguru and two colleagues were travelling on the N2 southbound from Ballito in a Toyota Quantum and stopped to give two women a lift.
Further along, they again stopped to give two men a lift.
“The men apparently said they were going to the airport, but about 50 metres into the drive, one of them seated at the back pulled out a firearm and demanded everybody get down.
“Two shots were fired, hitting the driver,” said Tongaat police spokesperson Manisha Maharaj-Marie.
Hit in the stomach and thigh, Naguru reportedly opened the door and fell out of the moving van, after which it came to a stop on the verge just before the Tongaat Toll Plaza.
He was later declared dead at the scene.
Maharaj-Marie said one of the employees was also shot and wounded and was taken to hospital after being stabilised by paramedics.
“After the vehicle came to a halt, the suspects ran into nearby sugarcane fields and disappeared.”
Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.
