KwaDukuza armed robbery victim dies in hospital five days after shooting

The robbers inside the shop were cornered and started shooting to find a way out.

Arshad Nakooda, one of two men shot in a KwaDukuza armed robbery last Thursday, tragically passed away on Tuesday morning.

Nakooda was shot in the side of the head, while his father Yusuf was shot in the arm as robbers stormed their clothing store on King Shaka Street.

“Armed suspects entered the store at 11.15am under the pretense of being customers. They held up the owner, Yusuf Nakooda, his staff and customers at which time the security company servicing the store was alerted,” said KwaDukuza Community Policing Forum chairperson, Salim Tootla.

Arshad was not initially in the store, but rushed back to help alongside the security team, said Tootla.

It is understood that when they arrived, the robbers inside were cornered and started shooting in order to find a way out, injuring both Arshad and Yusuf.

As news spread on the CBD CPF WhatsApp group, all local security providers and Saps teams responded to the scene, later apprehending five of the six alleged robbers.

“A thank you goes out to all responders. KwaDukuza is beginning to experience a new form of crime fighting by utilising and harnessing the power of communication on WhatsApp groups and the synergy of multi-disciplinary role players who are working together,” said Tootla.

The response was widely applauded, with KwaDukuza Saps members who attended the scene later receiving a commendation from the district commissioner.

A case of attempted murder and business robbery was originally opened at KwaDukuza Saps, but that will now become a case of murder, said KwaDukuza Saps spokesperson, constable Sipesihle Myeni.

The five alleged robbers were due to appear in court on Tuesday.
