Cane truck torched by angry Shayamoya protesters [Watch]
Umhlali police spokesperson Captain Vinny Pillay said they are investigating a case of malicious damage to property.
Angry Shayamoya residents set a cane truck ablaze during a protest against loadshedding last night.
Frustrated with ongoing electricity blackouts, they took to the P104, known as Glendale Road, and blocked it with tree branches, broken bottles, and the burnt truck.
When the Courier arrived this morning, children were helping themselves to the truck’s load of sugar cane, while a group of adults was stripping parts from the truck, probably to sell at scrapyards.
The only reason they offered for the protest was that “we do not have lights, and it’s unfair”.
The road is currently closed while the KwaDukuza fire department clears the road of debris. Public Order Police are also present in the area.
Etete and Groutville residents also blocked the R102 for the same reason but obstacles have since been removed.
Umhlali police spokesperson Captain Vinny Pillay said they are investigating a case of malicious damage to property, but no arrests have yet been made.
Motorists intending to travel to Glendale from Ballito can take the R102 and the Esenembe Road at Compensation as an alternative. At the T-junction, turn left and rejoin the Glendale Road at the Etete Primary School.
