Umhlali Saps warn against scammer posing as police captain
The man has sought donations for the needy, while promising an expedited firearms application.

A scammer posing as a ‘Captain Naidoo’ at Umhlali Saps has so far swindled more than 10 people out of money.
There is no such captain at Umhlali Saps and the station is hoping to prevent further people falling victim to the scam.
The man typically calls business owners to ask for donations to the needy, which have to be transferred to his personal account.
‘Captain Naidoo’ never meets donors in person and requests payment to be made via cellphone banking.
He has also previously posed as Umhlali Saps spokesperson, Captain Vinny Pillay, but most victims report him using the ‘Captain Naidoo’ alias.
Aside from donations, the man often poses as the station’s Designated Fire Officer (DFO), promising to expedite firearm applications and claiming to offer guns at discounted prices.
So far, at least 10 people have been caught by the scam, with cases reported at Umhlali, Tongaat and Durban North Saps.
If you have any information that could help police, call Umhlali Saps at 032 947 9900.
