Police probe N2 Tugela bridge murder and apparent suicide in Tongaat

These incidents come after two men were shot and killed by police at the Tongaat taxi rank on Sunday night.

Police are investigating a murder and possible suicide case after two men died, one on the N2 Tugela River bridge and one in Tongaat.

In the first incident, the body of a 55-year-old man was found shot and killed at the Tugela bridge.

According to police, he was driving toward Durban when his vehicle experienced a breakdown and he stopped.

In the second incident at Chelmsford Heights in Tongaat, police opened an inquest docket to investigate the death of another 55-year-old man.

His wife reportedly heard noises in a room and upon investigation discovered her husband dead, covered in his own blood.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said it is alleged the deceased stabbed himself with a knife.

In another incident, two men were shot and killed by police at the Tongaat taxi rank on Sunday night.

Tongaat SAPS spokesperson, warrant officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie, said police were notified about a blue Toyota Etios hijacked in the KwaMakhutha area.

“The vehicle was spotted on the R102 heading towards Tongaat central at high speed. The suspects opened fire on the police during the chase, which resulted in a shoot-out,” said Maharaj-Marie. “Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered a 9mm firearm with one magazine and five live rounds.”

Police are still looking for three suspects who escaped.
