Men burnt to death in suspected mob justice attacks in Nkobongo and Shayamoya

Umhlali Saps has registered two cases of murder for investigation.

Mob justice is believed to be behind two men attacked and burnt to death in Nkobongo and Shayamoya.

The burnt body of a man was found in Nkobongo on Saturday morning and the Shayamoya victim was discovered last week Monday.

Umhlali police spokesperson, captain Vinny Pillay said they have opened two murder cases.

“We believe these men were burned early in the morning, and suspect it was done by a group of people taking law into their own hands. We await for DNA results to identify the victims,” said Pillay.

Nkobongo councillor Ali Ngidi said he was aware about the incident, but didn’t have much details.

He added the area was experiencing a spate of housebreakings, business and armed robberies, as well as drug dealing.

“It wouldn’t come as a surprise if the victims were attacked by a mob, even though we don’t condone that kind of behaviour. We need more police on the streets and they should undertake serious operations.

“Selling drugs has sadly become a trend in our townships, and even women are joining the trade. Things are getting worse, with people being robbed in broad daylight,” said Ngidi.
