Killer of Tongaat banana supplier gets 41-year sentence

Ashveer Sukwa's body was found in his home with multiple stab wounds, while his father who had been stabbed and locked in the cold storage unit of their banana distribution business, survived the attack.

The family of a Tongaat banana supplier brutally murdered in his home in 2020 may finally have some closure.

Lindokuhle Maphumulo received a 41-year prison sentence in the Durban High Court earlier this month.

Maphumulo was sentenced to 18 years for the murder of Fairbreeze resident Ashveer Sukwa, eight years for attempted murder of Sukwa’s father Rajesh, and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances

The tragic incident occurred in October 2020, when Maphumulo took the life of Sukwa at his Fairbreeze home.

Sukwa’s body was found in his home with multiple stab wounds, while his father who had been stabbed and locked in the cold storage unit of their banana distribution business survived the attack.

Tongaat police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie, said Maphumulo was arrested in November 2020 in Ntapuka, Ndwedwe.

He was in possession of an Okapi knife stained with blood and R34 100 in cash.
