AK47-wielding gang member caught at Mvoti toll plaza

Police believe the man to be a member of a gang that attacked a cash-in-transit vehicle in Ndwedwe two weeks ago.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man while conducting a roadblock along the N2 near the Mvoti toll plaza last Thursday.

Searching taxi passengers, they found a man carrying an AK47 assault rifle with a double magazine, 62 rounds of ammunition, a pistol with five rounds and an undisclosed amount of money in his backpack.

Police spokesperson, colonel Robert Netshiunda said he was charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

“He had disguised himself as a family man by travelling with a woman and a young child.

“The suspect is believed to be a member of a gang that attacked a cash-in-transit vehicle in Ndwedwe two weeks ago,” said Netshiunda.
