KwaDukuza businessman freed after five-month kidnapping ordeal
Zakariyah Desai returns home as police intensify efforts to track down abductors.

The release of kidnapped KwaDukuza businessman, Zakariyah Desai, was secured over the weekend – five months after he was bundled into a car at gunpoint last September.
Desai (47), who returned home on Monday, had been attending mosque in KwaDukuza when he was abducted.
A prominent local businessman, Desai’s family owns Desai’s Cash & Carry in KwaDukuza.
While details of his return remain unclear, police minister Senzo Mchunu stated that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) is tracking down the kidnappers.
“We commend our law enforcement officers for their swift action in securing the release of a kidnapped victim in KwaDukuza. This success highlights the dedication and skill of our police officers. We urge them to continue their thorough investigation to ensure that all those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice without delay,” said Mchunu.
Police had initially arrested Mozambican national Esmael Nangy, Stefan Brites, and border policeman Samkeliso Honest Mlotshwa last December.
The men were charged with kidnapping, extortion, and attempted murder and were due to apply for bail in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court in January. However, the state withdrew all charges against them.
Desai family spokesperson Salim Tootla expressed gratitude for Zakariyah’s safe return and the prayers of the community.
“The family requests privacy at this time and will not be commenting further,” said Tootla.
