Ballito bouncer had no valid Psira certificate at time of alleged assault of two students

The bouncer previously identified in the alleged assault of two university students outside Ballito nightclubs was not lawfully permitted to work as a security officer, Psira has confirmed.

The finding comes as new CCTV footage appears to show four bouncers involved in the July 10 confrontation outside Conchilla and Good Vibes, including one kicking a victim in the head.

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (Psira) confirmed that Tristan Subroyen’s certificate expired in December 2025.

Psira spokesperson Bonang Kleinbooi said Subroyen was also not linked to any security company registered on Psira’s system.

“A security service provider that does not hold a valid registration status may not lawfully render private security services,” said Kleinbooi.

Police are investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after the two 20-year-old students were allegedly attacked following a dispute over being refused entry. The men acknowledged they had been drinking and became argumentative with the bouncers.

The Courier reported last week that CCTV footage appeared to show one student being repeatedly kicked and punched while on the ground and after being helped to his feet.

New footage obtained by the Courier provides another angle, showing two additional bouncers leaving their posts at Good Vibes and appearing to join two others involved in the altercation.

It appears to show a bouncer in a red cap holding one student by the arm before swinging him head-first into a parked car.

As two bystanders try to intervene, one is flung across the pavement. The red-capped bouncer then appears to throw the other bystander aside before kicking the seated student in the head.

The students are Umdloti residents studying at Cape Town and Stellenbosch universities. They asked not to be named, saying they felt humiliated by the footage showing them pleading for the assault to stop.

Good Vibes owner Claudio da Costa previously confirmed that Archon Protection was contracted to provide bouncer services at both clubs. A company search confirmed Subroyen is a co-director of Archon, however the company is also not registered with Psira.

There is no grace period for expired Psira registrations, and providing security services without valid registration may result in enforcement or criminal prosecution.

Subroyen has been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Through his lawyer, Sunil Singh, Subroyen previously denied wrongdoing, maintaining that it was a case of mistaken identity and that his Psira registration was valid. Singh did not respond to the Courier‘s latest
request for comment before publication.

No arrests had been made and no other people had been charged.
