A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with a stockpile of illegal ammunition discovered at a Zinkwazi Beach house yesterday.

The stash was found by members of the eThekwini District Economic Infrastructure Task Team (EITT), who tracked it to Zinkwazi after a prior operation in Sydenham, Durban.

Police had searched an outbuilding in Sydenham, where they found an AR 556 rifle, 39 rifle rounds, five rifle magazines, 19 pistol rounds, one pistol magazine and a set of safe keys.

Further investigation led them to the Zinkwazi house, where the 35-year-old man was arrested and a much larger stash was uncovered.

Police seized 2 562 R5 rounds, 178 AK-47 rounds, 20 SG rounds, 45 28G rounds, 42 Buck Shot rounds, one R5 plastic magazine and two black storage boxes.

eThekwini District Commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa, praised the EITT for their swift and efficient operation, describing the recovery as a major success in the fight against illegal arms trafficking.
