Matric pupil charged in grandfather’s death

The 18-year-old from Sundumbili, Mandeni, was arrested last week.

A matric pupil has been arrested for allegedly murdering his grandfather last year.

The 18-year-old from Sundumbili, Mandeni, was taken into custody last week after police received a tip-off linking him to the crime.

According to reports, the victim, a 48-year-old man, left home in November to go hunting but never returned. His decomposed body was later found by residents in a bamboo field within the Sundumbili policing precinct.

After months of investigation, detectives from Sundumbili Police Station, working with the iLembe District Police Tracing Team, gathered enough evidence to arrest the teenager.

He was taken into custody at his school in Sundumbili, where he allegedly confessed to the murder.

“He handed over the firearm used to commit the murder and also led police to his grandfather’s firearm, which he had taken from the scene,” said iLembe police spokesperson Captain Alex Thomson.

He has been charged with murder and has appeared in the Nyoni Magistrates’ Court.

He will remain in custody for further investigation.
