Man killed in shoot-out with police in Maphumulo

A firearm with a scratched-off serial number was found in the man's possession.

Police shot and killed a man who allegedly opened fire on police in the Okhalweni area of Maphumulo on Sunday.

According to police, officers were acting on a tip-off about a man allegedly in possession of an illegal firearm and driving a vehicle in the Maphumulo CBD.

The identified vehicle was found parked along the roadside in Okhalweni.

When police approached the car, they found two passengers inside, but the driver was not present.

“When the driver returned and saw police at his vehicle, he turned and fled. Officers pursued him, and he then opened fire on police. In self-defence, police returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect during the shoot-out,” said police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

A firearm with a scratched-off serial number was found in the man’s possession. No officers were injured in the incident.
