Alleged car thief killed in KwaDukuza police confrontation

The man allegedly shot at and drove aggressively towards the cops on Saturday before they returned fire.

A man was shot and killed by KwaDukuza Saps on Saturday after allegedly opening fire on officers at uShaka Mall.

Police said they had been following up on a tip-off regarding a vehicle stolen in Newlands East, which had been parked near the mall.

Officers spotted the driver inside a bottle store. When approached, he allegedly fired a shot at them.

Out of concern for bystanders, police said they did not immediately return fire. The man then jumped back inside the stolen vehicle and drove it toward the officers. After abandoning the car, he allegedly assaulted an officer with a firearm, prompting police to open fire and fatally wound him.

Police recovered the stolen vehicle – confirmed to be linked to a Newlands East case – as well as an unlicensed firearm believed to have been used by the suspect.
