KwaDukuza court delivers heavy sentences for murder and rape convictions
The two men sentenced will spend at least 15 years behind bars.
A Gledhow man has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for murdering another man in a fit of jealousy.
Adam Jabulani Bwanamali (40) was found guilty by the KwaDukuza Regional Court last Tuesday of murdering a 31-year-old who he said had been having an affair with his girlfriend. Evidence presented in court revealed that the night before the killing, Bwanamali had openly threatened to kill the man and “throw his body in the river.”
On the morning of the murder, Bwanamali told a traditional healer that was what he intended to do before luring the man to his home under the pretence of selling him a fan.
Once inside, Bwanamali made sure they were alone by ordering a friend to wait outside. An hour later, he returned wearing different clothes and appeared to have blood on his face and pants.
Later that day, he confessed to his brother that he had stabbed someone.
He later surrendered to police, providing a detailed statement admitting to stabbing the man multiple times and hiding his body in the bathroom under a white sheet. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
In another case, a Zimbabwean illegal foreigner was sentenced to life imprisonment last week Monday for raping a 12-year-old girl in Lindelani.
The incident happened in July 2022, when the 39-year-old man was dating the mother of the little girl, who visited them during her school holidays.
Two weeks into the holidays, the Zimbabwean and the victim’s mother returned late at night after drinking. All three slept in the same bed, with the victim near the wall. The victim initially witnessed the accused and her mother having sexual intercourse, before she was raped.
The child wrote a letter to her cousin detailing the assault and she informed her elders who called the police.
The man was also sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for contravention of the Immigration Act. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name is to be included in the national register for sex offenders. The court also found him unsuitable to work with children.
