Ballito teen’s family ‘shocked’ as attacker avoids jailtime

Aidan Hoppe was stabbed four times in late 2023.

The family of 19-year-old Aidan Hoppe have voiced their disappointment after the man who stabbed him multiple times in Ballito two years ago was handed a suspended sentence.

Aaron Marr (25) was sentenced in the KwaDukuza Regional Court last Wednesday after pleading guilty to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was initially charged with attempted murder.

The incident took place in September 2023 near Ballito Manor, where Marr stabbed Hoppe four times, twice in the stomach and twice in the shoulder.

Marr was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, and 18 months of house arrest. Conditions include a ban on alcohol and drugs and mandatory rehabilitation.

The sentence drew strong criticism from Hoppe’s family, who described it as “lenient” given the severity of the attack.

Family attorney Alistair Janssens said the family was shocked that Marr would not serve time behind bars.

He said Hoppe suffered life-threatening injuries and continues to endure the long-term effects of the assault. His recovery has cost the family more than R290 000 in medical bills.
