A security guard was shot and killed during an armed robbery at the KwaDukuza Mall on Monday evening.

Mall management said the guard, who was employed by Ezamalunqa Security, was on duty at Entrance 1 at around 6pm when he was approached by the suspect, who allegedly shot him at close range and stole his firearm.

The guard was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The suspect then fled on foot towards King Shaka Street in the KwaDukuza CBD, where additional Ezamalunqa Security guards shot him in the hand and disarmed him. He was later arrested.

iLembe police communications officer Priya Nunkumar-Bukum confirmed that KwaDukuza SAPS has opened a case of murder and added that the 40-year-old suspect was facing further charges.

“The suspect was also charged in a separate case for being in possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Both cases will be investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS detectives,” she said.
