Murder suspect arrested as police net drugs and guns across iLembe
Police across the iLembe district achieved several breakthroughs last week, arresting suspects linked to violent crimes and drug offences.
Ilembe police are cracking down on illegal drugs and violent crimes.
Nsuze police arrested a 31-year-old man wanted for murder during a raid at his home last Friday. The man is linked to the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Khanyelihle Mnyaka on January 20 at the Nsuze River.
Mnyaka was shot three times following an altercation. The shooter fled the scene but was later tracked down by detectives. Police seized his licensed firearm and six live rounds, which will undergo ballistic testing. He has been charged with murder and appeared in the Ndwedwe Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
In the Nkukweni area, Ntshawini, a 29-year-old man was arrested during an operation targeting drug dealing last Friday. Police found him in possession of mandrax tablets and pieces of rock cocaine. He has been charged with possession of drugs and is expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court.
Sundumbili police also made two arrests during routine patrols last Wednesday. A 25-year-old and a 30-year-old were each found in possession of 20 whoonga capsules. Both have been charged and will appear in the Nyoni Magistrate’s Court.
A 43-year-old alleged drug lord was caught with illegal drugs, guns and ammunition at his Sundumbili home, near Mandeni, last Thursday. The suspect was said to be “stunned” at the arrival of iLembe district police, who seized a 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off, six live rounds of ammunition, 380 whoonga capsules and 100 pieces of rock cocaine.
“The suspect is allegedly a drug ‘king pin’ who is known to be supplying drugs in the Mandeni and Sundumbili Policing Precinct,” said iLembe Saps communication official, Priya Nunkumar.
The man was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of whoonga and possession of rock cocaine. He will soon appear in the Nyoni Magistrates Court, while the gun will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in any criminal activities.
Meanwhile, KwaDukuza police arrested a 23-year-old suspect for attempted murder on Saturday. He allegedly stabbed a 26-year-old victim 11 times during a fight at Rocky Park on January 23. The victim was taken to hospital with the assistance of community members before reporting the incident to police.
