Police nab two men for possession of illegal firearms
The seized guns will be sent for ballistic testing.
Police in Ndwedwe and Sundumbili arrested two men found in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition in separate incidents last weekend.
A 59-year-old man was arrested in Ndwedwe on Sunday after being spotted walking near a local tuck shop with a firearm in plain sight.
Ndwedwe crime prevention officers became suspicious and questioned the man, who claimed he had a licence at home. Police later visited his home, but he was unable to produce a valid licence.
Officers also found ammunition in his possession. The firearm and 13 live rounds of ammunition were seized.
The man has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He is expected to appear in Ndwedwe Magistrate’s Court.
In a separate incident in Sundumbili, a 49-year-old man was arrested on Friday following a tip-off about his alleged possession of an illegal firearm in Ezimphongo.
Sundumbili crime prevention officers searched the man and his home, where they discovered a 9mm Norinco firearm with its serial number filed off, as well as four live rounds of ammunition.
He has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition and will appear in Nyoni Magistrate’s Court in due course.
The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing.
