Three arrested after Ballito car break-in leads to M4 chase
The arrests were made within an hour of the Ballito theft.
Three men were arrested on Wednesday after a car break-in at a Ballito shopping centre led to a swift interception on the M4.
Marshall Security were alerted at about 11am that the occupants of a white VW Polo had broken into a parked Suzuki Jimny before fleeing the scene.
The men allegedly stole a blue backpack containing clothing and personal items, along with a wallet holding bank cards and a power bank.
The victim opened a case at Umhlali Saps shortly after the incident.
Security officers immediately began searching for the car and spotted it travelling south on the M4 near La Mercy around midday.
The car was followed and intercepted at the M4 Umdloti turn-off and M27 intersection, where all three men were arrested.
All stolen items were recovered. Officers also discovered a separate bag containing jumper cables and car cleaning equipment, believed to be linked to another theft.
Further investigations revealed the men had used the victim’s bank card to make purchases at a Ballito bottle store and a fast-food outlet before their arrest. Empty food packaging and alcohol bottles were found inside the vehicle.
Saps members from Durban North arrived on scene and took the men into custody. They were transported to Durban North Saps for further investigation.
