KDM seizes counterfeit goods and illegal vehicles during CBD crime crackdown

A series of arrests were also made, including five illegal immigrants.

Law enforcement teams confiscated counterfeit goods worth R1.5-million and made a series of arrests during a crime enforcement operation in KwaDukuza last week.

The multi-stakeholder operation, conducted by the KwaDukuza municipality with police and private security companies, formed part of efforts to clamp down on crime and by-law violations in the area.

During the operation, three people were caught on separate charges of gun possession, drug possession and theft, while a fourth was arrested for attempted murder.

Five illegal immigrants were arrested.

Authorities also impounded four cars, a Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Quantum and Opel Corsa, linked to illegal roadside mechanical activities, and issued 31 notices for traffic violations.

“Compliance inspections were conducted at five retail establishments, with four found to be operating without business licences. One business was shut down due to gross noncompliance, unhygienic conditions, and the sale of expired goods,” said municipal spokesperson Bridget Shange.

A total of 8 598 items, including weapons, cigarettes and household goods, were confiscated. Expired goods were removed and further action will follow in line with the Business Act.

Several inspected buildings were found to be dilapidated, lacking approved plans, or illegally altered. Notices will be issued to enforce compliance.

The operation also targeted illegal utility connections, resulting in seven disconnections and fines totalling R128 304.72.

Liquor compliance checks led to the closure of eight unlicensed premises. In total, 28 formal and 18 informal businesses were inspected.

“This operation sends a clear and strong message to anyone who intends to undermine the law,” said Shange.

“We will continue to adopt a zero-tolerance approach.”
