Ndwedwe mother caught out after allegedly faking teen’s death for insurance claim

The woman allegedly later complained about the halting of her SASSA child support grant, prompting the investigation.

A 37-year-old Ndwedwe woman was arrested this week after allegedly falsifying the death of her 15-year-old child to claim insurance money.

According to iLembe Saps spokesperson, Priya Nunkumar, the woman visited the Ndwedwe Home Affairs in April and later received a death certificate.

She allegedly used it to claim an R8 000 insurance pay-out from her bank.

The woman then reportedly returned to Home Affairs to complain about the halting of her South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) child support grant.

“Ndwedwe Home Affairs did an enquiry and found out that the same female had fraudulently reported her child as deceased and applied for a death certificate,” said Nunkumar.

“A case of fraud was opened at Ndwedwe SAPS, and the suspect was arrested.”
