Pedestrian robbed at knifepoint in Ballito, two suspects arrested

Authorities believe the suspects may be linked to other robberies along the route.

Domestic workers, gardeners and others who walk to and from work are being urged to travel in groups after a recent cellphone robbery on Gourly Road in Ballito.

A pedestrian on her way to work was robbed at knifepoint on Thursday, August 13.

Umhlali Saps and two private security companies responded and arrested two suspects.

The victim’s cellphone was recovered, along with a knife believed to have been used in the robbery.

Authorities believe the suspects may be linked to other robberies along the route. Anyone who has experienced a similar incident is urged to report it to Umhlali Saps to help investigators link the suspects to other cases.

Marshall Security Community Support’s Andreas Mathios said walking in groups was one of the simplest ways to reduce risk, as criminals were more likely to target people walking alone.

He advised workers to keep cellphones concealed and avoid texting, taking calls or wearing earphones while walking.

Pedestrians should also remain alert to anyone following or watching them.

“If someone makes you uncomfortable, move to a busy area, shop, business or security-controlled property and ask for help,” said Mathios.

The same vigilance should apply when using taxis, with passengers encouraged to keep their belongings secure.

Mathios advised pedestrians to leave work with a charged cellphone and save an emergency number on speed dial. Anyone who suspects they are being followed should not go home, but instead head towards a busy area or security point.

“Your home must remain a safe place,” he said.

If attacked, shout to attract attention. If robbed, do not chase the perpetrators or fight over possessions.
“No cellphone or handbag is worth risking your life,” Mathios said.
