A 47-year-old KwaDukuza woman made her first court appearance on Monday following an alleged hit-and-run in which a pedestrian was killed.

Cindy Emelda Vallan faces charges of culpable homicide and failing to fulfil the duties of a driver following an accident.

According to the charge sheet, Ishmail Moolla was walking along Hill Crescent after leaving a mosque on Saturday when he was struck by a black Mercedes. The State alleges the driver failed to stop after the collision.

The second charge alleges that Vallan failed to determine the nature and extent of Moolla’s injuries, render assistance or establish the extent of the damage caused in the collision. Vallan remains in custody and is due back in court on Thursday for a formal bail application.
