Umhlali stabbing accused remanded in custody ahead of bail hearing
The 16-year-old faces an attempted murder charge following the stabbing of a six-year-old girl.
The 16-year-old accused in Tuesday’s school stabbing in Umhlali will remain in custody at the Durban Youth Correctional Centre in Westville until his bail hearing on Friday.
The boy, who cannot be named because he is a minor, appeared in camera (behind closed doors) in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court earlier today.
He is charged with attempted murder, housebreaking with intent to assault and cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and trespassing.
The State argued that the accused unlawfully broke into and entered the premises of Creative Classroom in Umhlali with the intention of causing grievous bodily harm.
He stands accused of stabbing a six-year-old girl several times. The State further argued that he intended to kill her.
On the trespassing charge, the State said the accused entered the school property by climbing through or over a fence, before entering a classroom without lawful reason or permission.
The accused has no private legal representation and has applied for Legal Aid.
His bail application has been scheduled for Friday, October 16.
The six-year-old girl is reportedly in a stable condition and recovering from surgery to repair intensive injuries from the attack.
