With the water crisis in our province and Ilembe being one of the most affected districts, Dolphin Coast Landfill Management (DCLM), Dolphin Coast Environmental Laboratory Solutions and Ukuphakamisa organised an inter-school competition for all KwaDukuza primary schools, where pupils were asked to design a model for saving water.
DCLM shared R20 000 between nine schools as part of the competition, with the children asked to use their creativity to design models that demonstrate a clear solution to wasted water in this time of drought.
Each school was asked to submit one model to a panel of judges made up of local government officials and representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) focused on water conservation, with the winning model best addressing the water shortage crisis in our region.
The coveted first prize went to Harry Bodasing Primary, who won R5000 and a school trip to both uShaka Marine World and Umgeni Water Works for their efforts.
Second place went to Hulsug Primary and third was taken by Lee Primary, who won R4000 and R3000, respectively. Everyone left a winner, however, with the six remaining participating schools each receiving R1000 for taking part.
The competition took place on October 20 and was backed by KZN environmental affairs deputy district manager, Nomusa Xaba, who praised DCLM for their contribution to water awareness and environmental responsibility.
DCLM CEO, Alain Mallart, said that it is essential for us to take care of our scarce water resources. “We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we have borrowed it from our children,” he added, as he declared his support for the ongoing awareness campaign around water conservation.
