What started with a single laptop and printer has grown into a thriving business and community hub in Shakaskraal.

Mpilo’s Internet Cafe was launched by 25-year-old entrepreneur Mpilo Biyela in 2021 when he struggled to find a permanent job after matric. He used the savings from a six-month internship to buy a second-hand laptop and printer, offering printing services to his friends and neighbours in Shayamoya.

Biyela moved from his bedroom to the veranda as business improved, before relocating to a dedicated premises in Shakaskraal in 2023.

“It’s all about taking the first step. If you fail, it’s not the end; learn, adjust and start again,” said Biyela.

Now, the services he offers have become integral to the community. Customers can send out university applications, CVs, job applications and much more without having to leave Shakaskraal.

Cafe regular Venessa Khumalo describes it as a “second home with great customer service and top-notch help with CV creation.”

Biyela hopes to partner with local schools to ensure all pupils in the community have access to every opportunity possible.
