No desalination plant for Ballito

The R600 million project is being built by a Japanese company for Ethekweni municipality

Reports that assessments were underway for a desalination plant in Ballito are unfounded.

Today an article appeared on page three of The Mercury stating that the R600 million project was being built by a Japanese company, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (Nedo) in the popular Dolphin Coast town.

However Semcorp Siza Water public relations officer Khosi Mathenjwa confirmed that there were no plans for a desalination plant in Ballito.

“That must have been a mistake, there are no plans for such a plant in Ballito,” said Mathenjwa.

The plant is in fact set to be built at the Bluff, Durban, and is part of Ethekweni municipality’s long-term intervention to address water shortages.

Desalination is the process of removing salt from seawater so that it becomes drinkable and is one of many possible solutions being looked at across the country to counter water shortages affecting many provinces.

Assessments were done for desalination plant for La Mercy between 2014 and 2016 that were fiercely contended by residents.

However La Mercy is no longer on the cards for the plant that is now being proposed for the South Coast.
