iLembe district celebrates triple gold victory at municipal service excellence awards

Mandeni municipality claimed the award for best performing municipality on the expanded public works programme.

iLembe’s constituent municipalities won three gold medals at the recent municipal service excellence awards.

Presented annually by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), the awards rank municipalities across 18 categories.

The awards were handed over at a ceremony in Pietermaritzburg last Tuesday.

Ndwedwe Municipality was acknowledged for the most efficient municipal infrastructure grant project, the Mdloti Bridge.

Mandeni Municipality claimed the award for best performing municipality on the expanded public works programme.

The iLembe District Municipality rounded out the victories by way of its economic engine, Enterprise iLembe, which was awarded best functional district development agency.

Four further awards handed out were:

• Silver award for cleanest township and best waste management outreach programme – KwaDukuza municipality for Ward 5 and Ward 18.
• Silver award for best sustained financial management – both KwaDukuza and Ndwedwe.
• Bronze award for best performing municipality on the expanded public works programme – iLembe.

“These awards have recognised the achievements of our institutions,” said iLembe mayor, Thobani Shandu.

“I hope they will encourage our workforce and leaders to meet challenges head-on, by being innovative in problem solving, excellent in management, increasing citizen participation and reaching towards higher service levels daily.”
